One-Day Tour from Skopje to Veles.

Departure in the morning hours. We will arrive in Veles in about 45 minutes.

If Veles was Tito’s first choice back then, today it’s a choice for many tourists who come to our country and want to experience a different, unusual, and extraordinary presentation of a city.

The title "Why Tito Chose Veles" will take us back to the distant year of 1946, from where we will begin our journey through Veles.

Veles was renamed Titov Veles in 1946, as part of a broader trend by the then Yugoslav authorities to name cities in honor of Josip Broz Tito.

Why Veles?

  • Historical and Revolutionary Significance – Veles was known as a city with a strong revolutionary tradition. Since the Ottoman period, and especially during the National Liberation Struggle (NOB), the city was a center of resistance and anti-fascist activities.

  • Industrial and Cultural Hub – After World War II, Veles became an important industrial city with the development of the metal, ceramic, and textile industries. This made it a symbol of the new socialist Yugoslavia.

  • Political Motives – Giving the title "Tito" to Veles was a way to further strengthen the cult of Tito and emphasize the city's ideological connection to Yugoslav socialism.

Return to the Old Name

In 1996, after Macedonia gained independence, the city returned to its original name – Veles, as part of the process of distancing itself from the Yugoslav heritage.

Veles is a city of two hills. The Vardar River flows between the left and right sides.

Whatever you wish to explore, you start from the old sycamores in the Saarmale Square.

A gathering place for many retirees who still love to share stories about local heroes.

What will we visit in Veles?

  1. St. Panteleimon Church
  2. The House of Kosta Solev Racin - the red poet
  3. The House of the Kasapov family
  4. Kojnik Square
  5. St. Cyril and Methodius Church and the Gymnasium with nearby monuments
  6. The National Museum of the City of Veles
  7. The Clock Tower
  8. The Varnalije with the old Veles architecture
  9. The Memorial Ossuary
  10. Lake Mladost (optional)

We conclude the tour with a traditional Macedonian lunch at a local family.

The tour is a full-day excursion.

We return to Skopje in the evening hours.
