Stay in a 300-Year-Old 'Museum' in Macedonia

Stay in a 300-Year-Old 'Museum' in Macedonia

Listen up, the team at Kajak.mk presents one of the most picturesque and impressive houses in Kratovo, available for rent, and which also functions as a folklore museum.

A great idea that could bring many tourists to Macedonian villages. The house is located in Kratovo, and from now on, you can book it through our 'private accommodations' category.

This beautiful, picturesque mountain town is ideal to visit during spring and summer.

In 2009, owner Stevče Donevski purchased this 300-year-old house from a family whose members were traders who had been selling textiles in Thessaloniki and Dubrovnik for many years.

Stevče decided to turn the house into a folklore museum with accommodations. The hostel is named 'Shancheva,' after the first owner of the house, Shana.

The house has been restored. It is made of wood covered with plaster. Before the purchase, the ground floor housed a shop selling textiles and raw materials from Thessaloniki. The first floor included a dining room, a living room, and three bedrooms.

Donevski says that the house has been renovated while preserving symbolic elements, such as the old traditional furniture. Traditional items, costumes, frames, everyday objects, containers, and jugs collected through extensive research are displayed throughout the house.

Before leaving, guests can purchase local handicrafts, ceramic pots, jugs, jams, honey, rakija, aromatic herbs, salt, spices, and wine. The house also features a kitchen where guests can enjoy a traditional breakfast prepared by Valentina, Stevče's wife.

The museum and rooms each have their names. The first room with three beds is called Kratovo, while the other three are named Kratizara, Koriton, and Krater. There’s nothing better than bringing our past back into fashion. The concept of 'luxury' has different meanings—it's up to us how we define it.
