Meet the Macedonian Rangers Who Protect Galichica!

Meet the Macedonian Rangers Who Protect Galichica!

The Kajak.mk team today introduces you to another highly valuable team we deeply respect for their work. At Galichica National Park, the ranger service is actively engaged in a long-term biodiversity monitoring program.

According to the Law on Nature Protection, the direct (physical) protection of nature in the national park is carried out by park rangers. There are five park rangers in Galichica National Park. It should be noted that other employees also have the right to record and report unauthorized or illegal activities within the park's territory.

The park rangers have the task of protecting the key values of the park, which include 4 invertebrate taxa and 13 vertebrate taxa considered globally endangered. Several hundred rare and protected species are represented in the park with significant populations. The numerous endemic species give the park its unique character. Some of these species are found only within the park boundaries, including: 29 taxa of algae, 13 species of vascular plants, 61 taxa of invertebrates, and 4 taxa of vertebrate animals.

In addition, the park is home to a large number of taxa found only in Macedonia or the Balkans, including: 46 taxa of higher plants, 97 taxa of invertebrates, and 14 taxa of vertebrates. Many species in the park are highly attractive and easily recognizable to visitors and the local population, making them a strong foundation for tourism development.
With the significant increase in the number of visitors, the number of “interesting” events has also grown. It is important to highlight the difference in behavior within the park between domestic and foreign visitors. In any case, there is a clear rise in public awareness among all visitors about the need for nature conservation.

What is very important is that they control all permits for use, other activities, and movement within the park boundaries. They also monitor the implementation of measures for protection against fires and other natural disasters within the park, as well as oversee pollution from various types of waste affecting the water and soil.

They also accompany groups of visitors and provide necessary information. We are glad that they take part in activities related to the revitalization of habitats and wildlife species.
