Promoting Macedonia Through the Rubik's Cube

Promoting Macedonia Through the Rubik's Cube

Aleksandar Arsovski is 29 years old and is a new local hero for the Kajak.mk team, who, unlike our other heroes, attracts tourists to Macedonia in a very different way. Aleksandar works as a team lead in a software company, but his hobby helps him meet new people, guide them around Macedonia, and promote our country beyond its borders by solving the Rubik's Cube.

For those who didn't know, there is a 'Macedonian Cubing Association' in Macedonia, formed as a result of Aleksandar's first competition in Sofia in 2018. He says that at his first official competition in Sofia, he managed to set a new Macedonian record in the Rubik's Cube. Breaking the record sparked an avalanche of positive reactions from the media, increasing the interest in organizing such a competition in Macedonia.

After Sofia, Aleksandar decided to organize a competition in Macedonia, where with the help of close friends, he founded the 'Macedonian Cubing Association.' Aleksandar has had a love for solving the Rubik's Cube for a long time. He has always been a fan of logical puzzles and challenges, but the Rubik's Cube gave him the chance to awaken his competitive spirit. He realized that with enough effort, he could become the best in Macedonia, and he succeeded in doing so.

Today, his age comes with many other work responsibilities, so in the last few years, younger 'cubers' have already taken the throne, a fact he is especially proud of because he knows that there are still young people in Macedonia practicing cubing. However, he says he still holds the record for solving the cube without looking.

The association operates on a volunteer basis. It consists of a group of individuals who are dedicated to promoting this hobby in Macedonia and do it purely out of love. The main goal is to organize official competitions in Macedonia. For a competition to be official, it must be supported by the World Cube Association (WCA) and have an official delegate from WCA.

Since 2020, Aleksandar has been the official delegate, giving him the right to organize official competitions in Macedonia. So far, they have held three official competitions even before his role was formalized, but the pandemic, he says, prevented them from organizing additional competitions.

He hopes that this spring or summer they will pick up where they left off. In addition to the competitions, they also organize smaller gatherings where they solve cubes, share experiences, socialize, and of course invite new people who are interested in joining their team.
