Meet Sonja Dimitrovska: The Woman Crafting Eco-Friendly Beeswax Wraps

Across Macedonia, everyone is talking: If you want a positive story for a beautiful and uplifting day, then visit www.kajak.mk and meet the people in Macedonia who create small, charming things that develop local and unique stories.

We’ve said many times that Macedonia is a country where realizing your dreams takes time. Many of you reading this right now may already be abroad, disappointed by your experiences, but as a team, we always say: Don't leave behind your ideas and everything you once wanted to achieve.

To be your true motivation, we’ve always wanted to share the positive stories of people in Macedonia who have poured their love and effort into creating something that will make them memorable. We’ve helped many increase their sales, and been a loud megaphone for many in front of the public, and that makes us very happy.

Today, we want to share another positive story with you. A beautiful, colorful, eco-conscious story that captivates with its creativity.

Today, we’ll tell you the story of retired economist Sonja Dimitrovska, who spent her entire career in the finance sector but now defies the numbers with her creative side, which, as she says, she has always possessed.

Sonja tells Kajak.mk that her love for nature and the desire to live in an eco-friendly environment inspire her daily and motivate her to create and enjoy beauty. For some time now, she has been dedicated to her hobby—handcrafting eco-friendly beeswax wraps as a reusable alternative to plastic and aluminum foil. The eco beeswax wraps have become well-recognized, and people truly love and use them, she adds.

Dimitrovska strongly believes in collective consciousness and that every individual choice impacts all of us. With a truly mindful choice to reuse resources, reduce plastic waste, and create healthy life habits, we can live a higher quality and longer life!

The idea for creating eco-friendly beeswax wraps stemmed from a gift—beeswax packaging—that she received from her granddaughter, who lives in New Zealand. With great enthusiasm, she created the eco beeswax wrap from 100% cotton material and natural beeswax, in her own way, as a packaging alternative to plastic and aluminum materials. These wraps can be reused for up to a year or more. The eco beeswax wrap is environmentally friendly, practical, with a beautiful design, and easy to maintain. Sonja says that these eco wraps are her fight against plastic pollution, waste creation, and excessive food consumption.

The entire process of making the beeswax wraps is time-consuming, requiring a significant portion of Sonja’s free time and demanding great dedication. Through many trials and experiments, she created and perfected her unique technique for making them. The beginnings were challenging. It was necessary to find high-quality cotton material, natural beeswax from local Macedonian beekeepers, and the right method for preparing and processing the wax and materials, as well as the proper procedure for impregnating the wax onto the fabric. The resources are carefully selected, and with much enthusiasm, she creates and crafts the wraps, especially knowing that in her retirement years, she is doing something useful.

The wraps are ideal for food storage, especially for fruits, vegetables, herbs, or bread. The wraps "breathe," allowing food to stay fresh longer, thus reducing excessive food waste. They are especially practical for keeping half-cut lemon, orange, apple, avocado, parsley, celery, carrot, cheese, bread, and more fresh. They can be used for wrapping sandwiches, covering containers, wrapping flowers, and more.

She does not recommend using the wraps for storing meat or cured meat products. With the warmth of your hands, the eco beeswax wraps soften and easily mold to the shape of what is being wrapped. They are very easy to maintain—after each use, they can be washed in lukewarm water with mild detergent, naturally air-dried, and ready to be used again. It is very important that due to the antibacterial properties of the wrap, fruits and vegetables last much longer. Depending on the frequency of use, once the wrap loses its primary function, it can be composted.

People who are interested in eco beeswax wraps already recognize and apply the concepts of recycling, reusing resources, and reducing plastic waste. When communicating with them, it is inspiring to hear their practical everyday solutions for eco-friendly living and how passionately they pass this on to the younger generation, to children, says Sonja. She believes that with a small change in daily habits, we can help both ourselves and the environment significantly.

With the right conscious choices and healthy habits, we can live a higher quality life. If we make an effort to incorporate small eco habits into our daily routines, not only will we contribute to preserving the environment from additional waste, but we will also save significant amounts of money. In fact, at every step, there is a better choice. It just requires each of us to pay a little more attention to all of this.
