The Ratevski Bamburci Carnival is one of the most distinctive and oldest living folklore events in eastern North Macedonia. Held annually, it is an important part of the cultural calendar of the Maleshevo region.

What is the carnival?
This is a traditional winter carnival with roots going back more than 600 years. Participants, known as Bamburci, dress in animal-hide costumes resembling sheep, goats, or cattle and wear large metal bells that produce a powerful sound. The masks and costumes are handmade and can sometimes weigh dozens of kilograms.

When is it held?
The carnival traditionally takes place on January 20th, in honor of the Christian holiday of St. John the Baptist (Jovanden).

Symbolism and atmosphere
The main purpose of the ritual is to drive away evil spirits and illnesses, symbolically cleansing the community and wishing for a healthy and fruitful year. The participants, with the loud ringing of bells and striking costumes, create a dramatic and unforgettable atmosphere. The event blends elements of pagan rituals, folk games, dances, and modern carnival expressions.

Community and culture
Although the Bamburci group is traditionally male, other local groups and guests often take part, enjoying the vibrant display of traditional costumes and instruments. The carnival is significant for cultural exchange and attracts visitors from across North Macedonia and the wider region.

Location
Ratevo Village, in the municipality of Berovo, located at the foot of the Maleshevo Mountains, hosts the carnival and preserves this rich local tradition, connecting the past with the present.
