Kameni Kukli near Kratovo: Mystical Valley of Nature and Legends

There are places that look as if they were carved by human hands, yet they are entirely shaped by nature. The stone formations near the village of Kuklica, close to Kratovo, are one of the most unusual natural phenomena in North Macedonia.

This area features more than 120 stone pillars, some rising several meters high, formed through the long-term erosion of sedimentary rocks over millions of years.

The Legend

Alongside the scientific explanation, the site is wrapped in a powerful local legend. According to tradition, a wedding once took place here where a young man was supposed to marry two different brides. When the jealous bride discovered this, she cursed the wedding guests, and in that moment everyone turned into stone – frozen forever in time.

Many of the formations are still associated with names such as the groom, the bride, and the wedding guests, making the legend an important part of the local storytelling tradition.
