Gjura Mara – The Tradition That Lives in Miravci
The event "Gjura Mara" is one of the oldest and most authentic folkloric traditions in Macedonia, held every year on the third day of Easter in the village of Miravci, Gevgelija.
Organized by the cultural and artistic society "TANEC" from Miravci, which has tirelessly preserved Macedonian tradition for over 90 years, this event is a true celebration of the people's spirit.
At its core lies the touching legend of the beautiful Mara, who was captured by Turkish soldiers but bravely saved by her brother Gjuro, who sacrificed his life. This story is brought to life through a special dance, performed only by women and girls – a symbol of resistance, dignity, and defiance of the Macedonian people.
The event attracts a large number of visitors every year, with folk ensembles from across the Balkans – including Croatia, Serbia, Greece, and local groups – participating. Thus, "Gjura Mara" not only celebrates Macedonian tradition but also carries it beyond borders.
"Gjura Mara" is not just an event – it’s a feeling, a story, and part of our collective heritage.
Visit Miravci and experience the magic of tradition up close. This year, be part of the story told through dance, song, and heart.
