Exploring the Ottoman Heritage in the Vardar Region
Islamic monuments in Macedonia stand as lasting testimonies to the influence and grandeur of the Ottoman Empire, which incorporated Macedonia into its realm toward the end of the 14th century.
The five centuries of Ottoman presence left a deep mark on the region’s culture, architecture, and daily life. Under Turkish cultural influence, local mentality, language, and customs evolved, while cities took on a distinctly oriental character.
One of the most notable legacies of that era is Islamic architecture—mosques, hammams, inns, and other structures that continue to impress with their beauty. Macedonian craftsmen also contributed to their construction, especially during the 19th century, adding detail through carving and decoration.
In our category of attractions, the exploration of Ottoman heritage is divided by region.
The Vardar region includes the cities of Veles and Negotino.
Veles, known during Ottoman rule as Köprülü or "the city of bridges," and Negotino, once a prominent Turkish estate (çiftlik), both preserve traces of that era.
In addition to the well-known Clock Towers in both cities, you can find mosques, madrasas, and other historical sites.
Our tour includes a local representative and a licensed tourist guide.
Coffee and lunch are included in the experience.
The tour departs in the morning and returns to Skopje in the afternoon.
It is available in multiple languages depending on the group's request.
