Today, we will introduce you to Slavko Bače, whose story you
can experience in his workshop in Ohrid. Slavko is well-known for his
"Homemade Bache" workshop, where he creates wooden ornaments and toys
for children.
From a young age, Slavko was fascinated by the way old
tools, once used by his ancestors, worked. Throughout his childhood, he learned
how to craft wooden products, but it wasn't until the past five years that he
began working more seriously with sophisticated tools.
The freedom of creation and expression is the most appealing
thing to a person. It's like the growth of a tree in harmony with its
surroundings, and this kind of freedom pushed Slavko to dive deeply into his
craft.
He learned the basics of the craft from his father, Sašo,
and now he continues to build upon that knowledge through various experiments
and hands-on work. Among the many successful experiments he's created, his
favorite is the first sculpture, "Archaic Freshness," made from the
root of an old acacia tree.
These days, Slavko is focusing more on making toys for
children, starting with wooden cars, trucks, puzzles, and even the occasional
night lamp made from watering cans.
Creating a unique piece or toy isn't as simple as it might
seem, Slavko explains. It starts with planning, drawing, and determining the
size. In the beginning, one must be very careful, anticipating every movement
and the next steps.
Once the working procedure is set, the preparation of the
wood piece for the given project begins, followed by cutting the parts and
assembling the product. All of this ends with fine sanding and wood protection.
Slavko's workshop is located in the old part of Ohrid, along
the road leading to the Church of St. John the Theologian - Kaneo. This
location allows him regular contact with tourists, who, Slavko says, motivate
him to continue dedicating himself to his work.
His experience as a tour guide, gained over the years, gives
him the energy to pass on his sacred knowledge to visitors who stop by his
workshop.
Slavko completed his high school education in Ohrid and
finished his studies in Sofia. His love for his homeland led him to return and
invest in local tourism. Today, his greatest support comes from his family,
especially his children. Each new toy he creates for them brings a new joy.
