Meet Sara from Struga: The Young Woman Who Crafts Jewelry from Sheep Wool

We constantly say that the mission of Kajak.mk is to introduce you to as many local heroes in Macedonia as possible, those who create unique things and inspire new generations. This mission will guide us until our last day as a platform. For us, tourism is not just about advertising villas, booking for New Year's, or grilling for Labor Day. For us, tourism means supporting the local communities that create small things of great significance for the development of tourism in Macedonia. This is what makes us different from other platforms and captures the essence of the birth of Kajak.mk.

Today, our team takes you to Struga, the town where the young artisan Sara Matovska lives and creates. A Struga native, Sara continues the family craft with love and tradition. Born and raised in Struga, Sara inherited the talent and passion for craftsmanship from her grandfather, a respected cook and watchmaker. His workshop was her second home, a place where she built the foundations of her artisan skills.

Sara combines traditional methods with modern ideas in her work. Her unique creations include jewelry made from wool felt materials, decorative candles from soy and beeswax, as well as organic soaps. Her signature is evident in every aspect of her craftsmanship, from the choice of materials to the final execution.

The inspiration to incorporate wool into her creations came from her desire to create something unique, something that isn't "classic." She was drawn to the technique of dry felting because of its specificity and rarity. This technique allows for the creation of detailed and intriguing works of art that reflect her passion and mastery.

Sara most often creates custom-made jewelry, especially brooches, which she frequently designs in the shape of pets based on pictures from her clients. Her earrings, necklaces, and hair wreaths, also made from wool, are characteristic of her unique style. When it comes to candles, she allows complete personalization in terms of shape, color, and scent, giving clients the opportunity to be part of the creative process.

The materials Sara uses are of the highest quality and natural. She prepares the sheep wool herself, from washing and cleaning to carding and dyeing. For the jewelry, she often incorporates silver accessories, while for the candles and soaps, she uses soy or beeswax, natural dyes, and essential oils.

Family and friends provide essential support on her creative journey. Her most loyal clients are those who appreciate the handmade craftsmanship and the effort Sara invests in her work.

Regarding her felted wool jewelry, Sara explains that the preparation of the wool can take several days, and the actual creation of a jewelry piece also requires hours of precise work. This attention to detail and focus on the finish make her products special and highly sought after.

For the candles and soaps, the process involves selecting raw materials, mixing the ingredients, and then waiting for them to harden. The soaps must cure for at least a week to reach optimal quality. Each stage of the production process is carefully planned and executed to ensure that the final product is of the highest quality.

Sara's approach to craftsmanship is not just a continuation of tradition, but also an expression of her creative identity. She carefully selects materials that are sustainable and natural, reflecting her concern for the environment and her desire to create products that are not only beautiful but also ecologically responsible.

Sara Matovska's journey as a craftswoman is also a path of continuous learning and adaptation. She experiments with various techniques and materials, always seeking ways to improve and innovate her products. Her work not only reflects her personal skills and passion but also preserves the rich cultural heritage of her hometown, Struga.

Sara Matovska is an example of a modern craftswoman who successfully combines tradition with modernity, creating unique products that transcend the boundaries of time and culture. Her work not only enriches the local community but also brings a piece of Struga’s magic to an international level, demonstrating that ancient art can be successfully integrated into contemporary aesthetics and needs.
