Explore Macedonia through the stories of honey

Explore Macedonia through the stories of honey

From the lowland meadows to the rugged mountain peaks, the production of honey in Macedonia is a reflection of the country’s deep connection to its land and heritage.

At the beginning of November, we announced the kajak.mk platform that we would share over 20 inspiring stories about what we proudly call our local heroes—individuals who create seemingly small but profoundly impactful contributions to gastro-tourism growth.

Today our caravan arrives in Probishtip, where Nenad is rearranging his beehive trailers in untouched nature for the new season and upcoming activities.

Nenad Lazarov’s journey is truly one of a kind and well worth discovering. While many of his peers choose to leave the country at his age, Nenad and his father have dedicated themselves to building Medlex, a thriving honey business that stands as a testament to their hard work and vision.

Nenad explains that Medlex is a family business that his father started 30 years ago. He has been involved with bees since childhood and has dedicated years to learning and perfecting his craft. His goal has been to help establish Medlex as a well-known brand in Macedonia.

What sets their "honey craft" apart is their practice of nomadic beekeeping. Alongside their base stations in the Probishtip area, they also maintain beehives across multiple locations in the Osogovo Mountains, with a special focus on the Knezhevo region. This approach allows them to produce unique, high-quality honey that reflects the diverse flora of these untouched landscapes.

Equipped with specialized tools and conveyors designed for transporting beehive crates, their beekeeping season begins in early spring with the first signs of vegetation. They start in the surrounding low-altitude villages, where blooms appear earlier, and gradually move to Kneževo, situated at an altitude of 1,100 meters. There, they harvest pure mountain honey, rich in the essence of the untouched highland flora.

The large number of bees enables the production of meadow and mountain honey, as well as immune honey, which Nenad mentions is quite popular for sale. In addition to honey, they also produce various other bee products, including propolis, pollen, honeycomb, royal jelly, and beeswax. Furthermore, they create candles from natural wax.

Nenad aims to establish the Medlex brand as a well-known name in the domestic market, specializing in the production and sale of 100% natural homemade products. Medlex products will soon be available for purchase in our grocery store. In the meantime, you can reach out to Nenad by clicking HERE.
