If you thought that wine can only be produced in the Tikvesh region of Macedonia, you're mistaken.
If you thought that wine can only be produced in the Tikvesh region of Macedonia, you're mistaken.
A while ago, the team at Kajak.mk introduced you to a unique family winery from the Prilep region, and today we want to introduce you to Filip, a young enologist with beautiful aspirations and a bright future ahead, who comes from the Ovchepolie region.
Filip is one of the responsible people behind the small family winery, Kievo, which was registered in 2021, the year it released its first two main products—Riesling and Vranec wines.
Kievo Winery is the first registered family winery in Shtip. Filip says that the long-standing family tradition of grape and wine production encouraged his family to take a bold step and officially register the winery's name, giving recognition to their years of hard work.
Today, Kievo has about 7 hectares of its own vineyards with Vranec and Riesling, situated at around 300 meters above sea level. The wine is produced with minimal intervention to capture the diversity of Macedonia's wine regions.
"Historically, in our family, there has always been a barrel of wine and rakija in the cellar. Even though my grandfather moved to the city, the tradition of viticulture and wine production was never eradicated. In 2009, we planted our first vineyard with Vranec and Riesling. My father, Sasho, founded the winery, and I am the enologist. Having worked in agriculture almost all my life, we always dreamed of having a final product. So, we dared to take this step and put the Ovchepolie wine-growing region in a bottle!" says Filip to Kajak.mk.
Currently, they produce wine exclusively from their own vineyards, which means Riesling and Vranec, and they are particularly proud of the Vranec, which gains a unique character from the Ovchepolie region.
The production process is handled by the family, from the tasks in the vineyard to sealing the bottles. The family’s policy is to produce wine with minimal intervention and no corrections. The wines are typical for the region and the harvest. They produce about 10,000 liters annually, with a total capacity of 17,000 liters.
In the future, they plan to offer interactive tastings that will include an optional (recommended) visit to the vineyards (with various transportation options such as MTB or hiking) to show guests the journey of the wine from vine to bottle. Their goal is to create a tasting space with a beautiful view of the endless green ocean of the Ovchepolie grain field and the Jakupica (Mokra) mountain massif. Of course, wine tastings will be accompanied by delicious local delicacies.
