The Old Skopje Bazaar. The Heart of Skopje.

A monument from a past, yet not so distant, time.

This bazaar is one of the largest and oldest commercial complexes in the Balkans and is considered an important part of Skopje's history.

Anyone visiting Macedonia, especially Skopje, should definitely visit it.

On our tour today, we will share the stories of the bazaar from the time of the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottoman period in the old Skopje bazaar left a significant mark on the city's architecture, culture, and customs. The bazaar was the center of trade and cultural life in Skopje during Ottoman rule. At that time, Skopje was known as an important trading hub in Southern Europe, and the old bazaar was where trade, production, and social activities took place.

The architecture from that period includes many significant structures, such as mosques, caravanserais, Turkish baths, and markets, which are still part of the unique ambiance of the bazaar. Many of these buildings have been preserved to this day, although some have been altered or renovated over time. The characteristic stone streets and cobblestones, along with the old shops and workshops, create a unique atmosphere that conveys the history and tradition of Skopje.

Part of the cultural heritage from the Ottoman period are also the traditions and customs present in the bazaar. The love for handicrafts, such as goldsmithing, leatherwork, and copperware, was visible in the local shops and workshops. Over the centuries, this place became home to many different ethnic groups, enriching the local cultural life.

The Skopje Bazaar, as part of the Ottoman history, still represents a symbol of multiculturalism, where the traditions of different peoples and religions merge.
