Quarantine introduced me to macramé — my new obsession!

Quarantine introduced me to macramé — my new obsession!

The pandemic encouraged many women across the country to make the most of their free time during quarantine and start a new hobby, which for some sparked a passion and helped them discover new worlds. Our team introduces you to Snezana Popova from Ohrid, a music teacher by profession, who spends her free time crafting macramé.

Snezana says that the difficulties of quarantine—the confinement at home, the restriction of social life, and the overwhelming burden of household and school obligations—gave her a reason to seek new ways to free herself from it all.

She started watching creative videos on YouTube and immediately fell in love with macramé. Her first step was buying macramé cord, with which she began experimenting. Now, she is deeply engaged in this home craft, which also brings her some extra income.

Snežana says that macramé and Macedonian ethnic elements would make a great combination if blended correctly. The macramé technique does not originate from Macedonian regions but comes from the Ancient East. It offers many different ways of crafting, and if the colors of Macedonian folklore are incorporated, it would create an excellent blend, says Snežana.

Snežana is confident that macramé can spark interest among tourists. Ohrid, as a summer tourist destination along with the lake, pairs well with the boho style. Such decorations would fit perfectly on the summer terraces of restaurants and hotels, as well as on the beaches themselves.

She is fully dedicated to promoting her products, aiming to introduce her macramé creations to as many people as possible. She plans to participate in many upcoming handmade craft fairs and also wants to ensure a wide variety of products are available at all times.
