Meet Mladen: The man who shares the spirit of Kratovo through every bite
Meet Mladen: The man who shares the spirit of Kratovo through every bite
In the heart of Kratovo, a town rich in legends and traditions, there is a man who passionately and devotedly builds a new tourism story. Mladen Micevski, a hospitality and tourism professor at SOU “Mitko Pendzukliski” – Kratovo, a local tour guide, and a PhD candidate focused on gastronomy and sustainable tourism, stands out as an ambassador of Kratovo’s culture.
Mladen’s story is now part of the world of Kajak.mk, and for us, he is the new local hero creating small actions with a huge impact on the promotion of tourism in Macedonia.
For Kajak.mk, he shares his passionate love for every corner of Kratovo.
“I am an enthusiast and a fanatic in the field of hospitality and tourism. I love working with tourists and young people because I have been a youth activist for many years,” says Mladen.
His journey into gastronomy began in his youth, growing up in a family where traditional food was prepared daily. His love for local flavors deepened through his studies and time abroad. “I have always imagined Kratovo as a successful and sustainable tourist destination. Because of my dedication to gastronomy, I focused on promoting Kratovo’s culture and cuisine,” he explains.

But the journey is not without challenges. “Challenges certainly exist, especially when you need to prove your sincere intentions within the community and introduce new ideas outside the comfort zone. However, dedication to my work, commitment to the ideals I hold, and a calm approach to problem-solving have helped me overcome all obstacles. Continuous research, travel, further education, and collaboration with colleagues allow me to see things from different perspectives and tackle challenges more easily,” Mladen adds.
Mladen’s daily life is dynamic and filled with aromas and flavors that connect him deeply to the town. “The hours spent with students cooking Kratovo and Macedonian specialties, organizing events to promote local culture, and working with tourists—all of this fulfills me,” he says. He introduces visitors to the secrets of Kratovo’s volcanic soil, legends buried in its stones, and, of course, the flavors of traditional cuisine. “I often guide them on what to try, and sometimes I organize an entire gastronomic experience,” Mladen adds with a smile.
His greatest satisfaction comes from the feeling of fulfillment and the opportunity to share knowledge and passion for cultural heritage. “Being able to see the results of my work, having long conversations with students and tourists, and building meaningful connections are the greatest rewards for me,” Mladen explains.
Family, teachers, friends, and students have always been pillars of support. As he says, some students often unconsciously tell him, “just keep going,” which he considers the sweetest confirmation that his mission has meaning.

Mladen believes that his work has a direct impact on the community. “Educating young people, passing on traditional culture and gastronomy, and raising hospitality and tourism standards are key to a better tourism vision and the sustainability of our culture,” he explains. Every step he takes, every tour he leads, and every specialty he shares with visitors contributes to presenting Kratovo as a rural and sustainable gastronomic destination.
In the future, Mladen remains committed to his mission: “I would like to see Kratovo become a successful, alternative gastronomic tourist destination, thanks to the human potential we are building today. I will never give up on this mission.” For those who wish to follow a similar path, he advises: “Dedication and persistence are key. Nothing changes overnight, but with long-term goals, anything is possible.”
Mladen Micevski is not just a gastronome; he is a guardian of flavors, stories, and traditions, a man who introduces tourists to the soul of Kratovo with both heart and knowledge. With every meal prepared, every tour guided, and every smile shared, he creates an authentic experience that is unforgettable.
