Meet Blaga: The Female Potter Who Inherited Her Craft from Her Grandfather

March 8th is a day to remember the relentless struggle of Clara Zetkin and Rosa Luxemburg, who fought for the equality of working women. The team at Kajak.mk is aware that this statement sparks many debates about whether women as workers enjoy the same rights as men. However, we at Kajak.mk can firmly say the following:

Today, March 8th, we dedicate our spotlight to a new local heroine from Negotino. Her life story is intertwined with pottery, and her craft allows her to become our newest local heroine, contributing in small yet impactful ways to the growth of tourism.


The team at Kajak.mk would like to introduce you to Blaga, one of the proud heirs of the pottery craft, passed down from her grandfather and great-grandfather. She shares that this tradition has been nurtured in her family for over 200 years.

Blaga also emphasizes that this ancient tradition of handmade household items is, unfortunately, fading away. While pottery was once essential for daily life, today’s youth in Macedonia show little interest in learning the craft.

Mastering the pottery craft takes several years, while perfecting it is a lifelong journey—as long as the potter has passion for the profession. This craft is deeply connected to art, as modern clay products are often decorated with various hand-drawn elements, adding an artistic touch to each creation.

Blaga’s right hand in this journey is her husband, with whom she builds the story of the "Ljubitas" workshop, located in the town of Negotino.

In their workshop, you can find a variety of pottery products, including flower pots, vases, small and large cooking dishes, jugs, mugs, and many other handcrafted ceramic items.
