Father and Daughter from Kavadarci Write a Wine Story

Father and Daughter from Kavadarci Write a Wine Story

Stories about quality wine in Macedonia will cease only when the last drop of wine falls in the country. One of the missions of the Kajak.mk team is to promote Macedonia as a quality wine destination, where excellent wine is produced and where local heroes dedicate their lives to the art of winemaking.

Today, we take you to the Tikveš region, where we spoke with Kristina, the woman proudly standing behind Winery MG, who, together with her father Mitko Gechev, invests great love and effort into the development of this winery.

Kristina says for Kajak.mk that "Winery MG" is a family winery that officially received its stamp in 2017, with facilities in the village of Sirkovo. However, with the development of the winery, it has been fully relocated to Kavadarci.

Although this winery is very young, the Gechev family has a rich centuries-old tradition of winemaking, and the first records of this family as one of the first settlers in the town of Kavadarci date back to as early as 1673.

Winery MG renewed the tradition of winemaking in 2017, and its first wine was a red wine made from the "Cabernet Sauvignon" variety. This wine won its first award, a bronze medal at the young wine competition in Kavadarci. This first and especially important award serves as a huge motivator for improving the winery.

In 2018, at the young wine competition, Winery MG won the prestigious "Grand Prix Platinum" award for a wine made from the "Merlot" variety. The winery also achieved great success with its exceptional white wines, particularly "Temjanika" and "Sauvignon Blanc."

In 2021, at the young wine competition, they stood out with two higher awards: a "Gold" award for their "Temjanika" wine, and a "Grand Gold" (big gold) for their "Sauvignon Blanc" wine. In 2022, at the young wine competition, wines from the "Temjanika," "Sauvignon Blanc," "Merlot," and "Cabernet Sauvignon" varieties won the "Gold" award, and this year, the best wine in the white wine competition was the only "Chardonnay."

Today, Winery MG produces 10 different varieties of red, white, and rosé wines: Merlot, Vranec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Temjanika, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Belan (Grenache Blanc), Rkaciteli, Stanushina, and Melnik. The total capacity of the winery is 10,000 liters.

The winery is located in a new facility with an area of 700 m², equipped with modern equipment. In addition to wines, Winery MG also offers brandy from 2020, which won a silver medal at the international spirits festival "Golden Čokanj" in Zenica, Serbia, in 2022.

Winery MG is an active member of the winery association "VinoTek" as well as the wine museum of the city of Kavadarci, located in the heart of the city park. In this museum, visitors can taste wines from Kavadarci wineries and get an up-close look at the history of winemaking in Tikveš. The love for winemaking, as well as the successes the winery has achieved, serves as a huge motivator for further advancement. Our goal is for Winery MG to become the leading boutique winery in the region.

Kristina says that all lovers of a glass of quality wine, made with a lot of love, are welcome to visit the winery and hear firsthand the story of the centuries-old tradition of winemaking in Tikveš.
