Discovering Montenegro from a New Perspective: A Unique Tourism Experience

Discovering Montenegro from a New Perspective: A Unique Tourism Experience

A country that should be on your travel list for the upcoming season is Montenegro. Open borders, a safe destination, and countless beautiful landscapes waiting for you.

Montenegro is a story in itself, and the people who live there are a unique addition to what we would call "Perfect Tourism." From Bar to Kotor, this mountainous country has so much to share with you.

But Montenegro is not just Budva and Kotor. Montenegro boasts excellent mountain destinations and villages that are the cherry on top if you carefully combine them into your travel adventure.

Today, we will give you another destination suggestion that can sweeten your sea and salty summer story along the way.

Some of you may have heard of the Kolasin region. Located in the southeastern part of Montenegro, it is becoming increasingly popular among tourists in recent years. Here you’ll find the Bjelasica mountain, where significant investments have been made in the ski center over the years.

We took a detour to the village of Selište, located at the foot of this mountain, where we were greeted by Borko Stepanović, who, along with his family, is developing beekeeping and tourism in the region.

Borko shares that his love for bees came from his father, who started beekeeping while studying in Belgrade. Even as a child, Borko helped with collecting honey and maintaining the bees' habitats. From day one until today, Borko says he can't imagine life without bees.

Over time, the beekeeping business has slowly grown, attracting a large number of tourists interested in the production process. Their location remains the same, and as a result, the "Stepanović" apiary has become one of the best honey producers in the region. This is thanks to the Bjelasica mountain, where more than a thousand different mountain herbs grow, making the honey produced by the bees quite medicinal.

The region is characterized by its preserved natural environment, where there are no factories or similar polluters, which is a crucial prerequisite for the production of high-quality honey.

What is quite interesting about the work at the apiary is the fact that throughout the year, they move certain bee hives to various interesting locations across Montenegro to produce different types of honey. These include meadow, mountain, forest, and wormwood honey.

Today, their farm is visited by numerous tourists from around the world. In addition to tasting and learning about the honey collection process, visitors can also sample various specialties such as "Medovina" (honey wine), "Medovača" (honey brandy), propolis, dried fruit in honey, various liqueurs, and more.

Borko says that for every tourist, there is appropriate protective equipment, and what's interesting is that many tourists meet bees for the first time and ask a lot of fascinating questions. He adds that anyone interested can help in the process of extracting honey from the hives, and in the future, he is considering opening api chambers where they will incorporate apitherapy into their offerings.

The Stepanović family has been involved in beekeeping for almost 50 years. Borko is proud of his father, who decided to leave Belgrade and return to his hometown, where he would invest in something like this. It started as a hobby, but today, the farm has over 150 bee families, making it a meaningful small family business.
