Dedino: A Historic Village Embraced by Nature

Dedino: A Historic Village Embraced by Nature

The eco caravan of Kajak.mk, dedicated to promoting Macedonian villages, decided to take a short break in the village of Dedino. In the lines that follow, we’ll offer you a double dose of greenery and tranquility.

Macedonia is home to villages that deserve a spot on your must-visit list. Among the many, the team at Kajak.mk chose to tell you about the village of Dedino, located in the Radovish region. With the help of photos by Martin Iliev, we’ll try to inspire you to visit this humble little village situated at 650 meters above sea level.

Martin says that the surroundings of the village are filled with fantastic spots perfect for a one-day picnic, and the village itself is an attraction worth exploring on foot.

The village of Dedino is part of the Konche municipality and is known as a significant site from the time of the Ilinden Uprising, when a gunpowder workshop was built there and a large part of the local population actively took part in the rebellion.

Several historical events are linked to the village, including the creation of the first handmade bombs. The workshop for hand grenades in the village was opened toward the end of 1896 but was shut down in November 1897.

During the time of the national liberation revolutionary movement, the two Macedonian revolutionaries Goce Delchev and Jane Sandanski stayed and spent time in the village of Dedino.

Considering that in older medieval times bishops were referred to as "dedo" (grandfather), it is possible that the village of Dedino was once the seat and residence of such a bishop—hence the name "Dedino."

Today, this village honors its customs and traditions. What is especially authentic about Dedino is its traditional folk costume and the folklore group that has been active for over 40 years.

An interesting fact is that this village is the largest consumer of "Skopsko Pivo" per capita in Macedonia.
