Grandmother Blagica's Craft: A Tradition That Fills Our Souls Today

Grandmother Blagica's Craft: A Tradition That Fills Our Souls Today

On Kajak.mk, you will find thousands of local residents who are directly or indirectly involved in promoting tourism in Macedonia. Our team constantly says that as long as we exist, we will continue to promote people who truly contribute to domestic tourism. Today, we will share the story of Sara and Damjan, who we believe some of you may have already heard of, but we hope to reach new potential supporters of their life's passion.

Sara and Damjan learned the craft from Damjan’s grandmother, whom they lovingly call Baba Blagica. As their story unfolded, they decided to open their own workshop and shop in the heart of Skopje, where they could showcase their handmade fabrics and folk costumes, promoting and preserving the Macedonian traditions.

The concept behind the stories on Kajak.mk is different from traditional media because we always highlight ways in which you, the reader, can support Sara and Damjan in their journey.

Kajak.mk is a platform most frequently visited by tour operators specializing in inbound tourism, which means that this workshop can easily be included in their programs and tours of Skopje. In addition to travel agencies, Kajak.mk is also visited by the business community, providing opportunities to purchase and gift products for employees or partners, which in turn offers direct financial support.

As for others, we would like to highlight that the visit and experience Sara and Damjan offer in their workshop—such as presentations and education on folk costumes, a brief weaving lesson, and the opportunity to wear a traditional costume and take photos—can be a perfect gift for you and your loved ones.

The workshop is now part of the Kajak.mk attractions database and can be viewed with one click HERE.

And now... in continuation, we would like to briefly share the story of our new local heroes who contribute to the promotion and development of tourism.

Damjan says that their passion for ethnic clothing and the stories connected to Macedonian traditions and melodies was passed down to them by Baba Blagica when they were 15 years old. Since then, they have been building on that knowledge, learning new skills, and today they are capable of creating various elements of the traditional costume.

Damjan, together with Sara, knows how to weave on a loom, and in their ethno corner located right next to the Theater for Children and Youth, you can find many woven belts, skirts, fabrics for vests, beaded bracelets, and rings—all handmade by them.

Upon your first visit to this warmly arranged space, you will find two young individuals sitting at two looms, weaving parts of traditional costumes.

Their space is divided into two sections: one for weaving, and the other is a salon where traditional costumes are displayed on mannequins and available for purchase.

What we at Kajak.mk would like to highlight is that anyone interested can visit the workshop, try on a traditional costume, and take a photo wearing it. For this service, Damjan mentions there is a modest fee.

If you would like to send a request to organize a workshop or learn the craft, you can do so with one click HERE.
