Brutalism in Skopje is a fascinating story connected to the period after the catastrophic earthquake of 1963. During this period, the city began a major reconstruction and transformed into an architectural laboratory, where some of the most impressive examples of brutalist architecture in the Balkans — and beyond — were created.

What is Brutalism?

Brutalism is an architectural style that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by:

– Massive forms
– Exposed concrete (béton brut)
– Rough and unadorned facades
– Focus on functionality over aesthetics

After the devastating earthquake that hit Skopje in 1963, several striking and highly specific architectural works rose from the rubble, including:

– The main post office
– The university campus
– The new railway line
– A student dormitory with a bridge connecting the buildings high above the ground
