Markov Monastery, known as Saint Demetrios, is a medieval Orthodox monastery nestled in the picturesque valley of the Markova River, near the village of Markova Sushica, about 20 kilometers south of Skopje. The monastery is named after the hero Kralje Marko, who, according to tradition, participated in its founding together with his father.

The church of the monastery was built in 1345, and its frescoes date from 1366 to 1378. They represent a prime example of Byzantine‑medieval art, depicting scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints. The architecture is in the form of a cross‑in‑square with a central dome supported by four stone pillars, typical of Macedonian medieval church tradition.

In the past, Markov Monastery was an important spiritual, literary, and educational center. It hosted monastic communities and schools, and notable figures such as the enlightener Kiril Pejčinović led the community at various times. The monastery has endured destruction and fires, yet part of its literary and artistic heritage has been preserved in archives around the world.
