This isn’t Norway—these are the Salakovo Lakes: An active weekend of exploration!
November may be a fairly dry month in Macedonia, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bring proper gear when heading to the mountains. Our team recommends consulting with a local guide who knows the area well and can organize your hike. Today, we have one outstanding spot that should definitely be on your must-visit list.
In the central part of North Macedonia lies one of the country’s most beautiful mountain ranges. The Jakupica massif, also known as the Mokra massif, is made up of several mountain sections. Mokra is home to many unique spots worth visiting, and today we introduce you to the “forest eyes” — the Salakova Lakes.
Before diving into details and ways to visit them, it’s worth mentioning that our “appetite” to share these stunning lakes with you was sparked by the photos of a very ambitious and adventurous young woman, known on Instagram as @marulka_987, who showcases breathtaking places worth exploring.
The Salakova Lakes can be reached from several nearby settlements: Crn Vrv from the north, Aldinci (Karađica mountain lodge) from the northeast, Taževo and Belica (Poreče) from the southwest, and Patiška Reka from the northwest.
The Small Salakova Lake is located in the northwestern part of the Salakova cirque at an altitude of 2,171 meters. It covers an area of 850 m², with a maximum depth of 2.5 meters. The Large Salakova Lake occupies the southeastern part of the cirque and is situated at an altitude of 2,170 meters.
