Rural Tourism in Macedonia: Foreign Tourists Experience Authentic Village Life in Gabrovo

The team at Kajak.mk has long been dedicated to telling the stories of Macedonia's local heroes. These are the people whose commitment to preserving tradition is reshaping the future of tourism. We aim to inspire a new generation to look toward their roots—focusing on local production and authentic hospitality. Our latest discovery is the Kostadinovi family in Gabrovo. By welcoming visitors into their rural home, they are sharing the scents and tastes of authentic Macedonian life in the most magical way.

It all started in 2007, when the first tourists arrived thanks to the initiative of Mr. Vasko Kocirov, a long-time tourism professional and fellow citizen from the Netherlands. He had a vision to introduce foreign and domestic visitors to authentic village life, and the local household embraced the challenge. At the beginning, the property was modest: a 50-year-old house of 60 square meters, several utility buildings, and a piece of land for organic fruit and vegetable production.

Over time, the site evolved into a fully equipped agrotourism complex: a gazebo for up to 30 guests, a camping area, a guest room with two beds, an outdoor bathroom, a portable pool, and private parking. Tourists have the opportunity to participate in food preparation—from kneading bread and taking it out of the traditional oven to chopping onions and preparing traditional zelnik and banitsa, as well as tasting homemade liqueurs, rakija, and seasonal fruits.

"We wanted our guests to feel what a real village day is like, to participate in the food preparation, and to taste the magic of Gabrovo," says Valentina. And indeed, tourists do exactly that: they get their hands in the dough, pull fresh bread from the oven with a baker's shovel, join the fruit and vegetable harvest for their own lunch, and often ask for recipes to take back home as memories.

However, this rural household offers more than just food. Guests can embark on hiking tours to Mount Belasica and Ogdazden, led by a local guide who is an expert in gathering wild herbs, mushrooms, chestnuts, wild strawberries, and blueberries. Additionally, they can experience tractor tours or join culinary workshops to prepare ajvar, lutenica, preserves, juices, and compotes made from the farm’s own produce.

The magic of this place lies in the aromas: warm bread, tavce gravce, zelnik, banitsa, homemade pot specialties, farm-fresh fruit, liqueurs, and rakija. All these scents draw tourists toward the wood-burning stove, and in the end, their memories, photographs, and signatures in the guest book remain as lasting testaments to the emotions they carry home.

The Kostadinovi family has a vision to expand their capacity, upgrade the kitchen and sanitary facilities, and develop a domestic animal farm. Their goal is to attract more guests, encourage their children to stay in their ancestral home, and inspire former neighbors who have moved away to return and continue the story of local development, preserving the village’s tourism potential.

The Kostadinovi rural household creates memories that last a lifetime—from the aroma of warm bread to the authentic flavors of homemade specialties and the vibrant energy of village life. Here, every guest takes home a piece of the magic of Gabrovo, an experience that inspires a deep connection to local traditions.
