A Macedonian Family Wins Over Germany with Food and Hospitality

A Macedonian Family Wins Over Germany with Food and Hospitality

The Kajak.mk team has recently launched a new platform titled “Macedonia Abroad,” dedicated to sharing inspiring and uplifting stories of Macedonians who have left their homeland and bravely continued their life journeys beyond its borders.

Guided by the belief that success is not defined solely by geography, but rather by hard work, dedication, and personal sacrifice, this platform highlights the power of individual vision and perseverance behind every meaningful achievement.

For us, Macedonia today does not end at its physical borders. It continues wherever the Macedonian language is still spoken, where the values of togetherness are preserved, and where the aroma of Macedonian cuisine continues to bring people together—no matter how far they may be from home.

Leaving one’s hometown is never easy, especially when it means saying goodbye to home, family, friends, and lifelong memories. Yet for a Macedonian family from Strumica, that decision marked the beginning of a beautiful and successful story—one that is now proudly told through Restaurant Dion in Leverkusen, Germany.

Zorica Stefanovska, together with her husband Filip and her brother Mitko, made one of the boldest decisions of their lives. Eight years ago, when the opportunity arose to purchase an existing restaurant offering Balkan cuisine, the young couple recognized it as a chance to build their own business far from home.

“We were young, motivated, and eager to work. We wanted to create something of our own—something that would represent us and our culture,” says Zorica.

Her brother Mitko, who had already been living in Germany, played a crucial role in this journey. His support proved invaluable—from helping them adapt to a new environment to becoming a full partner in the restaurant. However, the greatest inspiration came from Zorica’s mother—an experienced chef who remains the heart of the kitchen at Restaurant Dion to this day.

“My mother was our biggest motivation. Her love for cooking and the experience she brought with her gave us the confidence that we were on the right path,” Zorica explains.

Located in Leverkusen—a city known for its multicultural atmosphere and strong Balkan and Macedonian community—the restaurant quickly found its audience. Since the cuisine was already familiar to guests, the new owners chose not to make drastic changes to the menu. Instead, they preserved its authenticity and enriched it with even more care, warmth, and attention to detail.

Today, Restaurant Dion is well known for its Balkan and continental specialties, prepared with fresh ingredients and traditional recipes. Among the most popular dishes are kebabs, rolled grilled meats, and cheese-stuffed burgers—generous portions that leave a lasting impression even on the most discerning guests.

“Germans are truly impressed by our cuisine, especially by the rich flavors and large portions. For them, it’s something different and very special,” Zorica says with a smile.

As a small yet meaningful gesture, every meal begins with homemade makalo and warm bread—a welcoming greeting from the kitchen that immediately creates a sense of home.

One of the most beautiful moments in the restaurant is when Macedonian guests gather around the table, ordering mixed grills and Shopska salad served in the center, just as tradition dictates. These scenes often capture the curiosity and admiration of German guests.

“They don’t usually share food the way we do. When they see us all sitting together, eating and socializing, they’re genuinely fascinated,” Zorica explains.

Beyond food, Restaurant Dion also offers Macedonian yellow rakija and a carefully selected range of Macedonian wines, all warmly received by guests and perfectly complementing the authentic dining experience.

Today, Restaurant Dion is more than just a restaurant. It is a place where Macedonians feel close to home, and where German and international guests discover the beauty of Macedonian culture through taste, connection, and warmth.

This is the story of a family that never forgot where it came from, yet bravely built a future far from home—with heart, hard work, and a deep love for tradition.
