How to Travel Safely with Pets in 2026 – Complete Guide to Traveling with Domestic Animals
Traveling with pets is becoming an increasingly popular choice among tourists who want to travel without being separated from their pets. Modern tourism services and airlines are gradually introducing more flexible rules for animal transport, which significantly simplifies holiday planning. One of the airlines that offers pet travel options is ITA Airways, which allows pets to be transported in the cabin or in a special cargo compartment, depending on the weight and flight regulations.

Traveling with a pet has several advantages. It helps reduce stress for the animal, gives owners more freedom while traveling, and increases the demand for pet-friendly accommodation. In tourist regions of Macedonia, more and more hotels and apartments allow stays with pets, especially in natural and peaceful environments.
Preparation before traveling is a key step. It is recommended to take the pet for a veterinary check-up before traveling, verify vaccinations, and obtain health certificates, especially when traveling internationally. This is important because different countries have different regulations for animal entry.

When traveling by car or plane, the pet should be placed in an appropriate transport carrier that provides enough space for movement. It is good practice to gradually get the pet used to the carrier several days before traveling to reduce anxiety. The carrier should be well ventilated and securely fixed during the journey.
Food and water also play an important role. Large meals are not recommended immediately before traveling, especially if the trip is long. It is useful to carry a small amount of the usual pet food, as well as a portable water bowl. During long car trips, regular stops are recommended so the pet can move and refresh itself.
Traveling to sunny and warm destinations requires extra attention. Direct exposure to the sun should be avoided, and enough shade and fresh water should be provided. Activities with the pet are better planned for early morning or evening hours when temperatures are lower.

To reduce stress in pets, it can help to bring their favorite toy or a blanket with a familiar scent. Calm and relaxed behavior from the owner positively affects the animal and helps it adapt more easily to a new environment.
When traveling, it is important to avoid leaving the pet inside a closed vehicle in high temperatures, traveling without veterinary check-ups, and using inappropriate transport conditions. Safety should always be the priority.
With good preparation, traveling with a pet can be a pleasant experience for both the owner and the animal, allowing shared adventures and new destinations.
