Guna from Valandovo crafts a remarkable delicacy: sweet preserves made from hot peppers, showcasing creativity and passion in every jar
Today, Kajak.mk invites you to discover Valandovo, a
charming town known for its vibrant and colorful landscapes, reminiscent of the
seeds of a pomegranate. However, you may come to associate this place with
something even more surprising— a delicious jam made from hot peppers. This
local delicacy blends the fiery spirit of the region with its rich traditions,
creating a unique and unforgettable connection to this beautiful town.
As November began, we shared our vision for a month
dedicated to celebrating unsung local heroes. These individuals, filled with
passion and creativity, produce small yet extraordinary treasures that hold
significant value for the growth of gastro-tourism in Macedonia. Through their
efforts, traditional flavors are revived, and new culinary stories emerge,
enhancing the cultural and gastronomic tapestry of the country.
Meet Guna Markova, an extraordinary woman from Valandovo who
has dedicated over 15 years to revitalizing the local flavors of her homeland.
With unwavering commitment and skill, she cultivates native plants and
transforms them into delicious specialties that proudly represent Valandovo at
fairs across Macedonia. At Kajak.mk, we see Guna as more than just a culinary
artisan; she is a true local heroine whose work is integral to every story
about the vibrant Valandovo region.
For over 15 years, Guna has devoted herself to the art of
creating homemade food. Her journey began at a bustling intersection connecting
Valandovo, Dojran, and Strumica, a lively area filled with local vendors
proudly showcasing regional specialties. As her reputation for quality grew,
Guna’s flavors made their way to Skopje, where she gained a loyal following.
Today, her story—rich in tradition and passion—travels with her products, which
are featured at fairs dedicated to traditional and local cuisine across
Macedonia. Guna’s legacy is more than just food; it is a celebration of the
culture and heritage of Valandovo.
Guna's journey began with a humble yet extraordinary
creation: sweet preserves made from wild figs. This delicacy, steeped in
tradition and crafted with care, has brought her numerous awards and
recognition. "It’s a demanding process," she admits with a smile,
"but it’s sweet for the soul." For Guna, each jar tells a story—a
blend of effort, love, and the timeless flavours of Valandovo.
Guna's culinary repertoire has expanded significantly over
the years, and she now proudly offers a diverse range of specialties that
embody the essence of Valandovo's flavors. Her selections include sweet
preserves made from grated pumpkin and quince, as well as the tangy depth of
pomegranate vinegar. Each product showcases her dedication to quality. Among
her offerings, homemade ajvar and lutenica are staples of Macedonian cuisine.
However, it is her boldest creation—a sweet jam made from hot peppers—that truly
sets her apart. This unique delicacy highlights Guna’s innovative spirit,
blending tradition with a touch of daring creativity.
Guna's sweet jam is truly unforgettable because of its
unique sweet-and-spicy flavor. Made from the “Piperovi” peppers that she
carefully cultivates, this delicacy embodies the essence of Valandovo’s fertile
soil and warm climate. The peppers, nurtured under the golden rays of the
Valandovo sun, add a distinctive depth to the dessert, creating a harmonious
blend of contrasting tastes that linger on the palate. This flavor is a product
of tradition, passion, and the rich bounty of the land.
Guna describes her sweet jam as more than just a
dessert—it's a versatile culinary gem. Its sweet-and-spicy profile makes it a
perfect companion to an assortment of cheeses, where it adds a burst of flavour
to every bite. But the magic doesn’t stop there; this unique preserve also
elevates meat dishes, adding a subtle complexity that turns simple meals into
gourmet experiences. For Guna, it’s all about enhancing every table with a
touch of Valandovo’s essence.
For over 15 years, Guna has dedicated herself to her garden
and kitchen, turning nature’s bounty into culinary treasures. This work isn’t
just her livelihood; it’s her passion. "It fills my heart," she says,
"especially when customers share their kind words." Hearing that her
creations are enjoyed far and wide across Macedonia is a source of immense
pride for her. And now, through Kajak.mk, we’re excited to bridge the gap
between you and Guna’s one-of-a-kind products. Curious to try her flavours?
