Labor Day Destination Ideas for Active Tourism Off the Beaten Path
Labor Day Destination Ideas for Active Tourism Off the Beaten Path
Labour Day is not just about barbecues at picnic spots across Macedonia; for us, it’s another long weekend that allows us to be active tourists in nature. Our goal is to remind you that every free day of the year should be spent engaging in physical activities in nature because only by doing so can you relieve stress and improve your health and mood.
Today, in collaboration with SКОПСКО, we will suggest a few lesser-known destinations in Macedonia that could be your perfect getaway for the extended weekend. Before we begin with the suggestions, the teams at Kajak.mk and SКОПСКО advise you to be responsible tourists and make sure your waste does not remain on the mountain.

Have you heard of the Fojnik Peak? (Hiking)
Maria Mandarova, an active hiker and a big fan of mountain tourism, recently sent us photos of the stunning view offered by Fojnik Peak. You can reach the summit by driving to the village of Brest, and from there, you can organize a hiking tour to the peak, which is located on Suva Gora at an altitude of 1420 meters. Due to its location, it offers a magnificent view of the entire Kozjan Lake and the Treska Valley.

Have you explored Malesija? (Cycling)
Whenever cycling is mentioned, it reminds us of Rupicapra MTB, a group of passionate cycling enthusiasts who explore the western side of Macedonia in their unique way. A real attraction for cyclists is riding through all the villages in the Malesija region, which stretches along the western slopes of Mount Karaorman and is one of the most picturesque areas. During this tour, you will visit the Globocica hydroelectric power plant, the villages of Selci, Burinec, and reach Lokov, which is at an altitude of 1350 meters. From Lokov, you will cycle through 'Rzanovo,' to Zb'zhdi, Prisvojani, Mislodezhda, and finally to Struga.

Have you heard of the village of Globocica? (Kayaking)
There’s nothing better than getting into a kayak and paddling down the Crn Drim River. You can organize such a kayaking safari with our local hero Kosta Hiohi and Solaris, a man from Struga who is one of the key figures in the wonderful promotion of the Crn Drim.
These kayaking tours along the river’s current will introduce you to the pristine nature of the river, the Globocica Lake, and will end at the beautiful courtyard of the St. Elijah church, located in the new village of Globocica, which was built right after the old village was submerged at the bottom of the lake.

Have you heard of the village of Trebisht? (Horseback Riding)
For horseback riding enthusiasts, there’s the village of Trebisht. For those who are encountering this name for the first time, you should know that Trebisht is located in the Dolna Reka region, right next to Rostushe, on the right bank of the Radika River. The beautiful surroundings of the village offer you the chance to experience Macedonia in a unique way. Here, you can enjoy the untouched nature of Deshat and the village itself, which sits at an altitude of 940 meters. The horseback riding tours organized around the village are perfect for small groups eager for adventure and exploring new areas. Whether or not you’re a fan of horseback riding, our advice is to visit the village and discover its natural beauty.

Have you heard that truffle hunting is organized in Macedonia? (Hiking)
There’s a public secret that says "Macedonia is rich in truffles." This information should encourage you to join the search for this true natural treasure, which is rich in proteins, mineral salts, and never causes allergies. The tours are usually organized around the Skopje mountains, such as Kuchkovo, Vodno, Skopska Crna Gora, and Katlanovo, but there is also the possibility of organizing them in other regions of Macedonia if there are interested groups. These tours are organized by many local residents from all parts of Macedonia who have trained truffle-hunting dogs, the most important assistants in the search.

The team at Kajak.mk and "SKOPSKO" advise you to take care of the environment. Regardless of the destination you choose, it is your responsibility to collect your waste and dispose of it properly in urban containers. The illegal dumpsites that have sprung up across our country are a result of citizens' carelessness.
"That is why SKOPSKO launched the platform #OurPrideOurResponsibility, aimed at raising awareness among citizens through personal example and ecological actions. These actions will start at Lake Ohrid and expand to other natural landmarks, inspiring people to preserve and give back to nature for all that it provides us.
For more information about the platform, you can visit www.skopsko.mk."
