Crafting "Macedonian Mandalas" for Peace and Serenity of the Soul

Crafting "Macedonian Mandalas" for Peace and Serenity of the Soul

In an era of digitalization, mobile phones, and the internet, fewer people practice traditional hobbies passed down from their ancestors. The roots of a nation are identified through its customs and everyday way of life. What brings us joy, however, is the fact that in Macedonia there are still people who can tell the story of tradition through their handcrafted works. For most of the people we know, this is just a hobby to fill their free time, not their main livelihood.

This is the story of one of our new local heroines who still practices traditional hand knitting today. Her name is Elizabeta — a modest and creative woman from Bitola, whose drive to create comes from her love for her family and her city.

Elizabeta describes herself as a great admirer of Bitola, its history, tradition, and heritage. Those closest to her say she is an honest, sincere, and steady woman who lives to spread goodness.

Knitting has always been her hobby and an activity where she found peace. She learned the skill of knitting as a child, but in life, she never found enough time to fully dedicate herself to this creative pursuit.

Recently, looking for a way to enrich her free time with a relaxing activity, she began creating interesting and original pieces that could even find a place in other people’s homes as unique handmade works.

She learned the skill from her grandmother and aunt, and says that she has continued the family tradition of knitting. What perhaps sets her designs apart from previous ones is the fact that Elizabeta enriches them with the spirit of today, giving them a certain modernity and relevance.

For her, knitting is peace and joy — a creative therapy that brings a sense of fulfillment and pride with every finished project. Until now, she hadn’t considered selling these uniquely designed pieces, but she says that soon she will start sharing them on social media to attract more interest in traditional handmade crafts.

Each piece has its own design and color. They are all made in different sizes. Various colored threads are mostly used, and creating one piece usually takes about two days. If given a name, these designs would be called “Macedonian Mandalas.”

Direct communication channels with Elizabeta are not yet available, but anyone interested in contacting her can reach out to her daughter Sofia with one click HERE.
