The Vevchani Carnival – A Living Tradition That Never Fades
The Vevchani Carnival – A Living Tradition That Never Fades
Today in Macedonia, the arrival of the New Year according to the old calendar is celebrated. Before the pandemic, January 13th was marked in many ways across the country through various rituals — from ancient pagan customs to modern celebrations.
The team at Kajak.mk would like to remind you of the “Vevchani Carnival,” which stands out among carnivals worldwide for its deep-rooted tradition, mysterious atmosphere, and most importantly, its unique masks.
This year, the Vevchani Carnival is on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but until last year, we can confidently say it attracted thousands of international visitors who admired its remarkable heritage.

The carnival combines traditional ritual games with modern masks, performed in honor of the religious feast of Saint Basil the Great — the protector of the Vevchani Vasiličari, the village of Vevchani, and its people.
The carnival is more than 1,400 years old. It represents a fascinating blend of pagan and contemporary elements that have preserved its spirit, tradition, and unique location.
The entire village of Vevchani transforms into a vast “theater” during the carnival, where every house and street becomes a stage for masked performers acting out intriguing scenes.

There are three traditional masks: the famous Groom and Bride, the Musicians, and the Foolish August. Other masks appear as smaller or larger carnival groups whose performances aim to satirize public figures from social and political life.
During these days, the locals gather in their homes, celebrating the festival with red wine and song.

We spoke with Nikolina Bogoeska Kukoska, the owner of the renowned ethno house "Kutmichevica," which offers a stunning panoramic view of the entire Vevcani.
Nikolina has attended the Vevcani carnival for as long as
she can remember. In an interview with our team, she shared insights about life
in Vevcani during the carnival days.
We: Hello Nikolina. What interests us, and certainly our traveling readers, is the question: How was the tourism scene in Vevcani last year?
Nikolina Bogoeska: In 2020, as in previous years, we organized various exhibitions, concerts, and promotions a few days before the carnival, specifically on the 13th and 14th. These events attracted a significant number of visitors to the municipality, including guests and media teams from both the country and neighboring regions.
In addition to the major events, Kutmichevica, along with
other tourist facilities in Vevcani, has regularly hosted an Orthodox New
Year's Eve celebration in recent years. This event features a gala dinner, live
music, and showcases the traditional Vasiličar masks, making it a popular
attraction during the festive days.
The Carnival days, celebrated on the 13th and 14th, are rich
in ancient pagan customs that date back to the origins of the carnival itself.
Traditional masks, including those of the bride and groom from the two
neighborhoods of Vevcani (upper and lower), are featured prominently. Local
musicians and enthusiasts lead the festivities with zurli and drums, while a
large number of group masks participate in the main procession and parade on
January 13th.
On the morning of Vasilica (January 14th), the Vasilicari,
along with the zurli and drums, visit the houses of all individuals named
Vasil, celebrating their name day. The festivities culminate in a central
gathering, where the traditional burning of the masks takes place. This act
symbolizes the expulsion and destruction of evil spirits.

During Basil's days, local traditions take precedence in all
aspects, including food and drink. Kutmichevica, like other restaurants,
follows the example of local households and centuries-old customs. During this
festive period, they serve specialties such as homemade sausages (always
fresh), beer, Vevchani goulash, and homemade pies like kashanik (gjomleze) and
zolenik. Additionally, there is an unwritten rule to serve warmed brandy and
homemade red wine, both of which are made from local vineyards to cater to
guests' needs.
We: Where do tourists most often come from, what impresses them the most, and what do they seek in authentic food?
Nikolina Bogoeska: Throughout the year, particularly during
the spring and summer, as well as this winter period, we attract regular
visitors from almost all over the world. However, we most frequently see guests
from neighboring countries such as Albania and Serbia, as well as from the
former Yugoslav republics, particularly Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro.
Additionally, we are witnessing a growing interest from tourists from the
Netherlands and Belgium in visiting Vevcani and Kutmichevica each year.
The area beneath the slopes of Jablanica, along with the unique characteristics and natural richness of this mountain, provides excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, and even skiing. Recently, the mountaineering lodge located at 1,200 meters above sea level was renovated, and bicycles can be rented in the center of the municipality. All mountain trails and picnic spots are clearly marked with appropriate signs.
The Vevcani springs are considered a natural monument, contributing to Vevcani's recognition in recent years. Additionally, there are numerous churches and historical architectural masterpieces that showcase the fine craftsmanship of Vevcani's artisans and reflect the rich culture of this area from its inception to the present day.
In Kutmichevica, the ethnic ambiance of the restaurant is a
major draw for both foreign and local tourists. Visitors can enjoy stunning
views of the Ohrid-Struga region all the way to the top of Pelister. Most
importantly, we serve traditional dishes prepared primarily with homemade,
locally sourced ingredients.
The restaurant is situated in a restored building that is over 200 years old, showcasing architecture and design typical of traditional Vevcani houses. We strive to maintain and highlight this historical ambiance not only in the restaurant but also in the two apartments located within the same building.
In addition to our location and the restaurant's atmosphere,
we put significant effort and dedication into showcasing Macedonian cuisine,
with a special focus on the local flavors of Vevcani. We continuously update
and refine our menu to provide the best traditional Vevcani dishes—those that
our grandmothers and great-grandmothers used to prepare. Our offerings include
homemade sausages, Vevcani goulash, freshly baked bread, and traditional pies,
all characteristic of this region.
The location of our municipality provides an excellent opportunity for agriculture, allowing us to cultivate domestic organic vegetables and fruits, as well as extensive vineyards. We source products from local farmers, and the continuing operation of our local wheat mill enhances this supply chain. This connection to local resources is essential in preparing our authentic specialties.
Our commitment to using homegrown products, along with
services from the local community, has led us to be recognized as a strong
candidate for membership in the slow food movement in Macedonia. We are on the
verge of becoming one of the few restaurants in the region that adheres to
these principles.
We offer a unique alternative to everyday modern cuisine
while also preserving the Vevcani customs, culture, and recipes that have been
passed down through generations.
