Stogovo – An Untouched Mountain Gem in Macedonia and a Destination You Must Add to Your Travel List

Stogovo – An Untouched Mountain Gem in Macedonia and a Destination You Must Add to Your Travel List

Stogovo is one of the most beautiful and least explored mountains in Macedonia. Located in the western part of the country, between the Radika and Crn Drim rivers, it is a true challenge for lovers of authentic nature and hiking. Unlike more popular mountains such as Shar Planina or Bistra, Stogovo remains almost untouched by tourist development, making it a unique destination for those seeking peace, tranquility, and genuine wilderness.

The highest peak of Stogovo is Babin Srt at 2,268 meters, offering spectacular views of Debar Lake, Mount Korab, Jablanica, and Mavrovo Lake. Alongside it, the peaks Krchin and Tatinche are also well-known, attracting hikers with their beauty and challenging trails. The forests rich in beech and spruce, combined with numerous springs and diverse flora and fauna, give this mountain range an exceptional natural value.

Access to Stogovo is possible from several villages, with Prisojnica, Modrishte, and Drugovo being the most commonly used starting points. The hiking trails are clearly visible but lack official markings, and there are no mountain huts on the range. This means that every visit requires good preparation, enough food and water, and reliable orientation using GPS or a map. Precisely because of this raw character and lack of infrastructure, Stogovo is considered one of the last untouched mountains in Macedonia.

The mountain is best to visit during the summer months and early autumn, when the weather conditions are most stable and nature is at its peak. In winter, due to heavy snowfalls, access becomes difficult and is reserved only for experienced hikers. What makes Stogovo truly special is the feeling of being far away from crowds and civilization, surrounded only by fresh air, the scents of the forest, and the sounds of the wilderness.

Stogovo is a mountain that offers more than just hiking. It is a place where one can truly feel the power and beauty of nature, untouched by modern tourism. If you are a lover of authentic experiences and want to discover the real hidden treasures of Macedonia, this mountain is a destination you must add to your travel list.
