7 Best Natural Swimming Spots in Macedonia for a Refreshing Summer Escape
7 Natural Places in Macedonia for Summer Swimming and Cooling Off
When summer becomes unbearable, you don’t always have to head to a lake. Macedonia is home to beautiful rivers, natural pools, mountain streams and waterfalls where you can escape the heat and spend a day surrounded by nature.
These places are especially appealing to those looking for something different from a traditional swimming spot — a little hiking, nature, cold water and a truly refreshing summer experience.
1. Matka Canyon and the Treska River
One of the most accessible places to cool off near Skopje is Matka Canyon. The Treska River flows through a dramatic rocky landscape, with several spots along the river where visitors can cool off in the water. Swimming is not the main activity at Matka, but if you are looking for a combination of nature, water and adventure, it is hard to find a better option so close to Skopje.
Besides cooling off, you can spend the day hiking through the canyon, kayaking or taking a boat ride to Vrelo Cave.
2. The Source of the Babuna River near Nežilovo
For those looking for a true mountain experience, the source of the Babuna River near Nežilovo is one of the more interesting options. Babuna springs high on the slopes of Jakupica, below Solunska Glava, with its upper course surrounded by mountain landscapes and cold, clear water.
This is a place for those who want to venture deeper into nature. Instead of an organized swimming area, you will find mountain pools, rocks, forest and very cold water. It is ideal for a day of adventure with friends.
3. Pešti near Veles
If you are looking for somewhere with a little more of an adventurous character, Pešti on the Babuna River, near Veles, is worth exploring. The gorge is known for its rocky landscape and caves, while the river creates interesting spots to relax beside the water.
It is a great option for those who want to spend a summer day far from the asphalt, in the shade of the rocks and beside cool river water. For swimming, it is best to choose calm and shallow sections, as river conditions can change.
4. The Radika River near Rostuše and Mavrovo
The Radika River is one of the most beautiful mountain rivers in Macedonia, flowing through spectacular landscapes in the western part of the country. Around Rostuše, there are places where you can stop beside the river and find natural pools for cooling off.
The combination is perfect for a summer getaway: mountains, forests, cold water and traditional villages in the Mavrovo region. Instead of spending the entire day at a beach, you can turn it into a real little mountain adventure.
5. Koleshino Waterfall
On the slopes of Mount Belasica, near the village of Koleshino, you will find one of Macedonia’s best-known waterfalls. Koleshino Waterfall is around 15 meters high, with cold mountain water flowing through the Baba River.
This is not a traditional swimming spot, but it is perfect for cooling off beside the water, especially during the hottest summer days. The surroundings are green and shady, and the relatively easy access makes it suitable for a shorter family outing.
6. Smolare Waterfall
Another natural attraction on Belasica is Smolare Waterfall, which, at almost 40 meters high, is one of the most impressive permanent waterfalls in Macedonia.
The area around the waterfall is particularly pleasant in summer. You do not come here for traditional swimming, but for the cold mountain water, shade, forest and the feeling of being far away from the summer heat. You can also combine a visit here with Koleshino Waterfall, as both are located in the same region.
7. Topli Virovi near Demir Kapija
To finish the list, here is something completely different. Topli Virovi near Demir Kapija is a natural location that has long attracted people interested in adventure, camping and spending time beside the water.
The landscape is different from the mountain rivers, with natural pools, rocks and water surrounded by a wild landscape. If you want a summer outing that feels more like a small expedition than a traditional swimming trip, this is one option worth adding to your list.
The best thing about these places is that you are not going there just to swim. You are going to spend the day in nature — hiking, having a picnic, exploring and, of course, cooling off in natural water.
Keep in mind that most of these places are not official swimming areas. Rivers and waterfalls can have strong currents, slippery rocks and changing water levels, so always choose a safe spot and exercise caution when entering the water.
