Snowy Peaks and Pedals: Cyclists Brave the Cold from Skopje to Titov Vrv

Snow doesn’t stop adventurers in Macedonia from following through on their plans. Jordanco Cvetanovski and Kosta Shimbov completed yet another two-day cycling and hiking tour—from Skopje, across Popova Shapka, all the way to Titov Vrv.

The breathtaking photos taken during their journey are yet another reminder that Macedonia is an incredible destination for active tourism.

As usual, their tour began in Skopje, pedaling their way to the ski resort Popova Shapka. There, they spent the night at the Konak restaurant, before setting off the next day on an epic snowy adventure to one of the country’s highest peaks.

On Sunday morning, they set off toward Titov Vrv following the winter trail. Joining them on the tour was Blagoja, another passionate mountaineering enthusiast. Thanks to the pleasant weather, they decided there was no need for crampons, says Jordanco, as they expected favorable hiking conditions.

But ignoring what we in Macedonia already know all too well — that the mountain changes its "mood" every half hour — the wind soon began to join them on their journey.

The “fun” started with winds at 40 kilometers per hour, then 50, and just before reaching the summit, the wind picked up to as much as 70 kilometers per hour.

Upon reaching the summit, they managed to enter the tower at Titov Vrv, where they took a 40-minute break for coffee and a meal. Meanwhile, Blagoja, using a special device to measure wind speed, recorded that the wind outside was blowing at 76 kilometers per hour.

For the return trip, crampons were mandatory.

The return journey was quite cautious. Dressed like astronauts and stepping carefully, they made their way down towards Popova Shapka. The wind accompanied them all the way to Popova Shapka, where they got on their bikes and rode back to Skopje.

Stojanche says they’ve had even more interesting journeys, but this was his first experience on Titov Peak in such winter conditions. Over the weekend, they covered 130 kilometers by bike with 1,800 meters of elevation gain. Meanwhile, their hiking portion measured 22 kilometers with 2,000 meters of elevation gain.
