Weekly Discovery from Macedonia: Babuna Peshti – a Hidden Canyon Near Veles

Just a few kilometers south of Veles, the Babuna River forms an impressive natural formation in its lower course known as Peshti. This is a narrow canyon with high limestone cliffs, small caves, and a wild river landscape that still feels untouched.

What makes Peshti special

This part of the Babuna River is characterized by densely packed rock caves carved into the limestone walls. These caves gave the area its name, Peshti. Some of them are linked to very ancient human activity, and archaeological findings in the wider region indicate traces of life dating back to prehistoric times.

Nature and atmosphere

Peshti is a place where nature dominates with minimal human influence. Rocky slopes, clear river water, and silence create a strong sense of isolation. Birds of prey are often seen in the area, along with rich vegetation clinging to the steep cliffs.

Visitor experience

A visit usually involves walking along the river, exploring small caves, and taking short breaks by natural pools and rocky spots. It is an ideal location for photography and for those seeking peaceful, wild nature close to the city.

Location

Peshti is located a short distance from Veles, along the lower course of the Babuna River, in the transition zone between the Jakupica mountain range and the Vardar valley.
