Homemade Food by the Road: A New Kind of Tourist Stop in Macedonia
Homemade Food by the Road: A New Kind of Tourist Stop in Macedonia
In Britain, small stalls selling homemade cakes are becoming a favourite surprise for people travelling through the countryside or walking local trails. At the end of a garden or beside a road, visitors may find freshly baked treats, choose what they like and pay using an honesty box, a card or a QR code.
These stalls, known as cake sheds, are a simple idea that brings together home baking, local communities and travel. Some visitors go out of their way to find them, following social media recommendations or simply hoping to discover something different along the way.
From home baking to a small business
For the people who run them, the stalls offer a way to sell their baking without opening a traditional shop. Some bake alongside their regular jobs, while others gradually turn a hobby into a small family business. Behind the products are often personal recipes, family traditions and treats that are hard to find in a supermarket.
The selection varies with the baker and the season. It might include homemade cakes, brownies and other sweets. Customers may not know exactly what will be available, making each stop a small surprise.
Social media helps people find them
Many stalls are tucked away from busy high streets, so recommendations play an important part in helping people discover them. One visitor shares where they stopped and what they tried, and others set off to find the same place.
Location matters, too. A stall beside a walking trail, in a village or along a popular route can become a welcome break for travellers. Part of the appeal is the feeling of discovering something local and personal.
A simple idea, with plenty of work behind it
Although the stall itself may look simple, running one involves preparation, baking, packaging and keeping the display stocked. Sellers also need to follow the food preparation and sales rules that apply in their area.
For some, it is a source of extra income; for others, demand has grown enough to make it their main occupation. But the experience is about more than buying a cake: visitors discover a local product, while bakers share their work directly with the community and its guests.
Could a similar idea work in Macedonia?
Macedonia also has homemade recipes and local products that could make for a memorable stop along the way: a slice of zelnik or pie, homemade preserves, honey, cheese or seasonal fruit. A small, well-kept stall along a tourist route could give travellers a taste of the place they are passing through, while offering local families another way to sell their products. Perhaps one of these simple stops could become one of the details visitors remember from their travels through Macedonia.
