Experience the Taste of Macedonia at Plevna with Homemade Local Delicacies

While much of the Western world is searching for ways to bring local, healthy, and traditional food back to the table, Macedonia is fortunate to have these practices well-preserved. Across the country, you'll find a warm hospitality and households that take pride in serving homemade, local, and traditional cuisine.

Today, the team at Kajak.mk takes you to 1,100 meters above sea level, to the village of Kuratica, where hosts Ivana and Goran have opened their doors to the world of Kajak.mk. These new local heroes expertly harness the fertile Macedonian soil to cultivate and prepare a variety of traditional specialties.

The ethnographic household 'Plevena,' run by the Mickoski family, is more than just a place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a space where every visitor becomes a part of the community and experiences the essence of rural life.

Since 2011, Ivana and Goran Mickoski have been preparing a variety of specialties for guests from all over the world, offering them a unique glimpse into authentic rural life. At 'Plevena,' every guest is invited not only to taste but also to participate in the preparation of traditional Macedonian dishes, providing a genuine learning experience and cultural exchange.

We call it: "Motivation from the Heart of Kuratica," offering a different kind of experience that, in addition to food, includes various tours of the surrounding area.

'Plevena' is not just about local food; it’s a life full of love for nature and the sharing of cultural wealth. Exciting activities like donkey hiking and interaction with the local population offer an authentic experience that stays with visitors long after they’ve left.

The area features numerous trails leading to stunning viewpoints overlooking Lake Ohrid. The hosts also organize mountaineering and easy hiking tours. After each adventure, guests are welcomed with a hearty spread, including fresh salads, 'makala' (a traditional dish), appetizers, and main courses.

The heart of the household at 'Plevena' is the cauldron over an open fire, a central gathering place where stories are shared and memories are made. Each guest has the opportunity to participate in the cooking, from preparing homemade bread to crafting a fresh mixed salad using ingredients directly from the garden.

Cultural tourism at 'Plevena' goes beyond a simple vacation; it’s an opportunity to rediscover traditional values that remain deeply rooted in the hearts of those who preserve them. A visit to Kuratica and the 'Plevena' household serves as a reminder that the true lessons of humanity and community are often found in the simplicity of rural life.

The team at Kajak.mk is excited to begin organizing gastro experiences at 'Plevena.' If you're looking to experience a unique kind of tour, send us a request with just one click HERE.
